Driving home from a great 2 hour dentist appointment I was lucky enough to be rear ended (by a Bellevue City employee no less). I’m fine, I think the car is pretty fucked though. Definitely needs to new rear quarter panels and a new rear bumber - which, on a ‘77 BMW 2002 that I got for $3500, seems pretty unlikely to be worth fixing.

The trunk space in these fuckers is killer and, put on a cheapo roof rack… violla - a moving van is born. I’ve moved my entire house with a 1976 BMW 2002. This is how stupid a king sized mattress looks on top of one :)

Kayak on BMW

26Aug07

This is what a 19′ Necky Pinta kayak looks like on the 2002. Didn’t really notice any difference while driving on the highway.

OK, so the classic plates.. really just a tax savings (at least in WA). While I drive “almost never” (I work from home and can walk to most things I need) I am using this as a primary vehicle (so “primary” I’ve put two tanks of gas in it in 3 months) which probably violates the whole “classic = only drives it to car shows”… which is lame… cars should be useful - even if they’re classics. Anyway… got a roof rack for it so I can do a bit of kayaking … will post funny pictures of 19′ kayak on itty-bitty-bmw when I put it on :)

Second Tank

19Aug07

Filled up for the second time last week.  Almost all the driving I’ve done has been short trips around town.  Given that - looks like it gets 21 mpg.  Definitely not great - but might be better if the driving was mostly highway.  I also drive pretty much as fast as I can at all times - which can’t help.

Fog Lights

I hate the fog lights on this car…

Need to figure out how to replace these with the round ones…

Gab factor

I’ve owned lot’s of cult cars… mostly old VWs (bugs, buses and campers) and, part of the fun is that people will come up and talk to you about your car, which never happens with the generic “modern” asprin cars (I call them this because they’re white, boring and look like you could swallow them).

Well - the 2002 is much “worse” then any other cult car I’ve owned before. I had to go to two stores today and no less than 5 people stopped to chat about car (or cars in general). What’s mildly amusing is I’m not much of a gear head … so I get lost pretty fast in these conversations.

Guys buy puppies to meet chicks… well, chicks should buy 2002’s to meet guys… :)

BMW Cleanup

15Jul07

Finally got the BMW back from Strictly BMW. It’s a bit “tighter now” but the engine still is kind of rough feeling.

Replaced the old steering wheel with a new Momo. Pretty happy with it. It’s smaller than the “school bus” sized stock wheel… it’s a little “Italian Flashy” for the old interior but I’m working on that.

Tons more pics up on Flickr.

Shop Time

06Jul07

I was kind of wondering if this would happen with an old BMW and it’s been more than confirmed.  As they’ve been fixing things on that car they’ve been finding parts they need, which they need to order, which tacks on a day or two every time this happens.

So, at least at this point, I don’t think it’d be terribly smart to have an 02 as your primary car… hopefully this is just a one-off experience.

Momo!

05Jul07

The Momo Millenium Sport wheel came… very nice and, totally Italian (100 times more “flare” than required).  Came with what looks like $100 worth of ultra glossy advertising books.   The beemer’s still in the shop - but, hopefull I can get this on tomorrow.
